The Ethnological Museum Berlin (EMB) has many untapped digitized picture files which they would like to make available to the public under an open license. However, these files are not yet searchable, because relevant metadata to the images are missing. In contrast to humans, a computer is not able to see what is shown on the pictures. Up to today, trainees of the museum thus had to collect the missing information in a time consuming effort with slow progress.
Within the Commons for Europe project, Fraunhofer FOKUS EMB teamed up to solve this problem. Via the crowdsourcing app "Tag. Check. Score." the EMB makes the treasure of hundreds of pictures available to the public. Users help by tagging pictures with information and categories. Further, users help check if others have made a mistake by checking other peoples tags.
The search engine allows users to browse through the content on the basis of the just collected meta information. Pictures can also be downloaded.
By using the app, users voluntarily perform a “digital community service” and multiply the working power of the individual interns at the museum. The newly obtained data is made available to the EMB via an export function. This enables them to import the data to their own special systems, check for accuracy and add historical information and expert knowledge. Based on the metadata obtained via the app, the pictures can be made accessible to the public via various platforms in a searchable format.
The app can best be used via desktop and tablets but is also accessible via smartphones.
The crowdsourcing app "Tag. Check. Score." was developed by the Code for Europe Fellow together with Fraunhofer FOKUS.
The images used are provided by and belong to the Ethnological Museum Berlin. The Museum is responsible for the pictures. The picture files have not been reviewed, so their content is uncertain. Thus, some of the historical photographs and images may be perceived as problematic from today’s perspective. However, they are part of the historical inventory and shall be made accessible. We therefore kindly ask for the sensitive and respectful handling of this material.
